“The Runaway Jury” has a very specific title. A runaway could be defined as something that is corrupt. The jury in this book is nothing but corrupt. One of the main characters of the story is Fitch, a man that tries to have his hands on the jury. He thinks he has them in the palm of his hand, but the jury slips, or “runs away” from his grasp at all times. When these people such as Nicholas Easter or Jerry Fernandez joins the jury, they all have something in their past that they are not proud of. For some of them smoking is something they regretted doing, and in this jury they are trying to runaway from the bad choice of smoking. Nicholas is after something, hes been in many of these trial cases before under different aliases.Every time he tries to get one of these tobacco companies, he seems the fail. Otherwise he wouldn’t still be doing these cases. His goal of taking down these companies for whatever reason, is running away from him. The jury many times defies regular traditions in civil cases, such as one sequestration visit a week, and using paper plates and plastic cups at lunch time. In a way they more control what’s going on rather than the judge doing so, there aren’t by any means your typical jurors, and they run away from the traditions presented to most civil cases. Throughout the whole story Fitch has people always following and taking pictures and stalking the jurors, they have to find ways to run away from these people. Not only that, but they have to run away from their fear of the Fitch to tell Judge Harkin these things are going on.
Runaway doesn’t have to be corrupt–just out of control. Ironically, this jury is under the control of Easter and most are unaware.
